Composer Chosen for HPT's 156th Production

The HPT 156 is excited to announce that Derrick Wang '06 has been chosen as the composer for As The Word Turns. As Band VP Ethan Abraham said, "We were looking for catchy compositions that had that Pudding flare. We chose Derrick because his songs are well-constructed and put smiles on our faces."

Not a newcomer to the world of music, Wang lives and breathes music. He is a music concentrator in Mather House and he hails from Cockeysville, MD, just outside Baltimore, where he graduated from Gilman School and the Peabody Preparatory. He began playing the piano and composing in the late 80's. He composed the Harvard Freshman musical in 2003 and won the 2002 Young Playwrights' Festival at Center Stage. His compositional styles include classical, theater, pop, and rock.

Wang is excited about the opportunity to be a part of the company. He said, "I was attracted to the Pudding by the prospect of working with both students and professionals in an established production company. I am also looking forward to that all expenses paid trip to Bermuda."

Wang's musical compositions for the show have a wide variety of musical styles. His songs include "She's the U to My Q" (Gershwin/Cole Porter-esque), "Vowel Movement" (big band/swing), "Unbound to Be a Success" (vaudeville two-step), "Time to Shine" (theater-pop), and "How I Spell Love" (ballad).
